ONE of the most desirable — and rare —Vauxhall models from the inter-war period is this six-cylinder 20/60 with a dramatic boat-tail body design.
The Hurlingham coupe, named after the UK Hurlingham Club to target a posh clientele, was built by the factory but limited in production volume. Today, there are believed to be only about 20 Hurlinghams in running condition in the world.
The 20/60 was released in 1927 as Vauxhall’s first six-cylinder car since WWI. It was an overhead-valve, seven-main bearing engine capable of more than 70mph. General Motors, who controlled the company at the time, wanted the car to appeal as a conventional touring car for the international markets.
The engine sat in a simple ladder-type frame of pressed steel with four-wheel drum brakes.
The Hurlingham was a two-seater — plus dickey seat —and was not available as a chassis. It has an engine with a higher compression ratio and a 4.18: 1 back axle (standard 4.73: 1) than the standard 20/60 model range.
This example has had a sheltered life and since being imported in 1930 to Western Australia, has only three owners and covered only 10,000 miles since restoration.
It was based in Kalgoorlie since being imported and moved to Perth with its third owner in 2001. It has been in its current ownership for more than 40 years.
The owner stated that it was previously owned by Kalgoorlie resident Jim Forrest, who did not do any restoration work on the car other than take it apart.
Mr Forrest bought the car from a retired panel beater, who had modified the rear aluminium panels to fit a box-type structure. In its restoration in the early 2000s, the current owner obtained patterns for panels and rebuilt the rear bodywork to its original design. The aluminium panels around the seats, the doors and under the windscreen to the bonnet are all original.
The current owner has meticulously maintained the car and regularly showed it at car events and outings in Western Australia.
It is now being offered for sale as the owner is no longer able to drive.
It has a club licence and is located in Perth and available for inspection. Additional information and photographs are available. Transport to any buyer location and inspection reports can be arranged at buyer’s cost.
