One of the last MGAs up for sale
Price: $55,000
Make: MG
Model: MGA MkII
Year: 1961
Mileage: 31,500 miles
NOW SOLD: This 1961 MGA MkII with the 1600cc engine represents one of the last of the model to be made before production shifted to the newer MGB. It has been regularly serviced regardless of mileage and any repairs needed have been carried out without question. Now for sale, it is finished in an original MGA colour of the era and has been repainted about some years ago. The car has a rare removable hard roof and side curtains but does not come with a soft top. The cabin is in excellent condition with the tan vinyl upholstery showing no damage and having near-new cushioning in the seats without any sag. Its odometer shows 31500 miles which is likely to be on its second rotation. Tyres are Toyo that have plenty of tread remaining. The test drive shows the car is very tight and steers accurately. Under brakes it is stable and pulls up strong and straight. Cruising is a joy with the Mk II’s taller final drive giving 100km/h at 3500rpm and 80km/h at 2900rpm. The car at cruising is quiet (hard top in place) and noted by compliant and supple suspension without any creaks or harsh bumps through the bodywork. The cooling system is in excellent condition and the water temperature never exceeded the normal band during an outing in the car in Perth’s 30C-plus temperature.
Instruments are in perfect order. The interior is unblemished and the work to ensure the car remains in top condition is remembered by a 1999 MG Car Club concours d’elegance plaque on the dashboard. It is located in and can be inspected in Perth. Additional information and photographs are available. Transport to any buyer location and inspection reports can be arranged at buyer’s cost. The Mk II was built from June 1961 and was on sale for only 15 months before being replaced by the MGB. Sales were low, with only 8719 units built as many buyers were lured by the cheaper MG Midget that went on sale at the same time, and the news of the impending MGB.
It is identified by the front disc brakes and Dunlop knock-off wheels, MkII badges to the bonnet and boot, a waterproof dash fascia, horizontal tail lights (shared with the Mini but repositioned), and a revised grille with the bars set almost vertically. The Mk II also carried over the more powerful B-Series 1600cc engine (actually 1622cc) and raised power in 1961 to 86bhp from the previous 1600 that was rated at 79.5bhp.
