Pininfarina’s beautiful convertible expression of Fiat’s 124 Coupe has been painstakingly built as a replica of an Abarth Spider. It is the subject of a complete restoration in 2000 which included a full engine rebuild, drivetrain overhaul, new suspension and Rosso corsa paint with Abarth-spec blacked bonnet, boot lid and detail. Specialists were involved in each stage of the renovation to ensure a very high standard. Care was taken to ensure the Fiat remained as original as possible, including keeping the engine capacity at 1800cc, although performance was boosted by internal modifications and additions such as the high-dome pistons (from the Fiat Regatta). The single two-throat carby was replaced by two twin-throat units. While apart, the original wiring was discarded and replaced with a new loom and harness. In addition, the dashboard was renewed and all dials and switches ensured to be in working order (mileage unknown when the odometer was refurbished). The suspension was replaced with Koni components with Superlite alloy wheels and the brakes were upgraded. The top-quality cloth hood is almost new and the cabin has been restored with the original Fiat seats replaced with a pair from a Mazda MX-5 and upholstered with leather facings in the red-black colours of the exterior. It was also carefully detailed including the removal of the US-inspired square-shaped side indicator lenses, replaced with smaller European-spec circular repeaters. Newer work includes a replacement alternator with a NOS unit. The car drives beautifully with a responsive and strong engine, crisp gear changes, precise steering and firm suspension. Its exhaust note typifies the Abarth performance brand. Included are a tailored car cover, battery trickle system, five original Cromodora wheels (painted grey), original carby and manifold, and original two-spoke steering wheel. It is on full license (WA) expiring December 2022. It has always been securely garaged and serviced and maintained. It can be inspected in Perth. Additional information and photographs are available.
