Classic Mercedes sports saloon

This 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL was one of the finest cars of its era and after a lifetime of being well cared for, now seeks a new owner. The car has been kept in top condition all its life but more recently has been the subject of extensive renovation work that ensures reliability while maintaining the original performance. More than 55 years after was made, the classic style of the Mercedes-Benz 280SEL still turns heads. Despite the years, it remains a highlight of the Mercedes-Benz range, stepping up the W111 predecessor’s similar style with a sportier, lower silhouette with a bigger glasshouse. The W108 was one of Mercedes’ best models, selling 360,000 in its nine-year run, even though it was available only as a four-door sedan and lacking the coupe and convertible versions previously offered. Even today, the W108 represents class. This example is a 280SEL (long wheelbase) of which only 8250 were made in its three-year production — less than one-tenth of the volume of the smaller-wheelbase, six-cylinder 280SE (91,051 units) and 280S (93,666). As such, it is regarded as a rare model within the range and because of its quality and enhanced cabin room, has become much in demand for buyers of large classic saloons. It is fitted with the 2.8-litre six-cylinder engine updated from the W111 with Bosch mechanical fuel injection and four-speed automatic transmission. It boasts 158bhp (118kW) and 240Nm of torque, sufficient to push it to 100km/h from rest in 12 seconds, just one-second behind the 3.5-litre V8-engined 280SEL 3.5 sibling. This car, which has no apparent rust or indications of being involved in an accident, is original complete with timber-trimmed dash, perforated vinyl “leatherette” seats and — in restored condition — vacuum-powered windows. The owner said the car was previously the subject of a major restoration program. Additional information and photographs are available. Transport to any buyer location and inspection reports can be arranged at the buyer’s cost.
