Aerodynamic perfection and hand-built craftsmanship powered by a refined BMW engine make the Bristol a rare jewel that for collectors and motoring enthusiasts, make this example a much sought after car. It was so exclusive, so expensive and labour intensive to make (only five per week) that in England, only the period Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Lagonda were more expensive. Bristol, a division of the English aeroplane manufacturer, started in 1947 with the BMW 328-inspired 400. Its updated 401 (1948-1953) changed to an all-alloy body and brought considerable — and ongoing — improvements. This car, finished in Heather Grey, came straight from the factory to Australia, delivered to Mr Oswald Machin in Victoria. It had a succession of owners and has undergone five more paint colours as owners continually refined and restored the car. The current owner has just completed a full, bare-metal restoration with new upholstery and a thorough overhaul of any part needing attention. The colour is now Odyssey, as close as possible to the original Heather Grey colour. This painstaking work included adding modern conveniences (under-dash aircon and heater, LED lighting, full rewiring, electric opening boot and fuel cap, blade-type fuses, alternator, thermal fan, and so much more) and the same attention to the drivetrain, suspension, wheels, brakes and steering. It drives beautifully and looks stunning and so advanced that it looks and drives nothing like the cars of its era. No wonder it was in demand in the post-war period but why it is still a car that attracts collectors and other discerning enthusiasts. It is on concessional (club) license.
